Steps in Lesson Planning              

The goal of all lessons is to ENGAGE students in learning.  

Preplanning:

	Identify skills and concepts for grade level.
	Identify state standards for grade level.
	Determine objectives to meet standards.
	Decide how you will assess student achievement of the objectives.
	Research, choose, and design activities to meet objectives.
	Decide how best to teach the activity. (investigation, direct instruction, etc.)
	Determine what special needs of students need to be accommodated.
	Determine what materials you will need to teach the lesson.

Write Lesson: - use the form provided

	Determine how you will interest students in lesson (anticipatory set or springboard). This means, the hook, the way you will start the lesson to get the students interested and wanting to know more.  Examples would be to read a story, do a KWL chart or other graphic organizer, ask stimulating questions, show a picture, tell a story, etc.  It shouldn't take a long time and should help you lead directly into the lesson.
	Decide how you will present lesson (motivate, model).
	Decide what students will do (guided, group, independent practice).
	Decide how you will assess student understanding (student product, quiz, observation, rubric, etc.).
	Decide how you will close the lesson.

The following section is not required but you need to become familiar with the need for reflection to assess and improve your teaching.

Following the lesson: Reflection

	Think about what went well with the lesson.
	Ask yourself if students met the objective(s) of the lesson.
	Think about what did not go well.
	Decide what you will do differently the next time you teach this lesson.
	What did YOU learn from the lesson?

Write these reflections at the end of each lesson plan.
