The Giver by Lois Lowry is a Newberry Medal winning young adult novel about a  Utopian (dystopian?) society where there are no problems or suffering.  There is also no creativity or nor freedom of choice.  I will be interested to hear the reactions of my YA students to this book.  I hope to arrange for the class to view the movie based on the book that, providentially, is in theaters right now.  We will then compare the book and the movie and consider how teachers can help children understand the relationships between books and movies made about them.
